Unlock the Joy of Reading for Every Child

Give young children in Greenville County the gift of monthly books through three key programs: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, our Book Bank, and the Little Free Library initiative. Discover how your family, organization, or community can get involved.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

Greenville First Steps is proud to offer Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a monthly free book program for children from birth through age 5. Many neighborhoods in Greenville County are currently eligible for Imagination Library, and we are working to add more every day.

How it works:

  • Register online today through Greenville First Steps
  • Receive your first book in about 8–10 weeks
  • Enjoy a new, age-appropriate book each month until your child turns five
  • The first book is The Little Engine That Could; the final book is Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come!
  • After you apply, you’ll get connected to our Every Step of the Way newsletter, where you’ll receive updates on free book programs, parenting tips, age-appropriate activities and events, and ways to support your child’s development every step of the way.

Eligibility:

  • Greenville County resident
  • Child under age 5 living in one of the eligible neighborhoods

Book Bank for Local Partners

We support local organizations—childcare centers, nonprofits, preschools, and other groups serving young children—by providing free books for distribution to families.

If your organization works with children ages 0–5, you can request books through our online form.

Little Free Library Program

We provide fully assembled Little Free Library kits, including a post and starter set of books, to partners in select Greenville County zip codes. These libraries increase community access to books and support early literacy at a neighborhood level.

Details:

  • Available for Greenville County addresses
  • Includes: library structure, post, and children's books
  • Recipients are responsible for installation and ongoing maintenance
  • Library stewards help restock books and encourage community use
Kits are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
